common casper scenario: Supporting a Struggling Peer without sabotaging yourself

You know the classic casper scenario where you are busy with a group project (or something), but also keeping tabs on a friend who’s clearly in a rough patch? What do you all do to stay helpful to your friend without making it sound like you’re sacrificing your own work?

This is such a valid scenario. My strategy would be to give them a time slot where it’s their turn to vent, but keep boundaries and still maintain the amount of time you need to finish your work. Doesn’t feel like ignoring them, but also keeps the support from bleeding into important work time.

A conversational approach would be saying something like: “hey I care and I’m here for you, but I’m also heads down till X time.” That little boundary line lets the person know you’re not ghosting them, just reserving focus for something else. In CASPer scenarios I tweak it to show empathy and a plan to check back later, so it’s still moral but also clear that self care isn’t optional.
